Accessibility statement
In force from 7 October 2026
We want anyone to be able to use SukuTree. This statement covers the website sukutree.fi and the SukuTree app.
1. The website
The website is built to meet WCAG 2.2 at level AA (EN 301 549), and we are not aware of any shortcomings.
Everything on it works with a keyboard alone, and focus is always clearly visible. Text and background contrast meets the requirements in both the light and the dark theme. Form fields have visible labels, and errors are given as text next to the field. The example pictures of a family tree are described in text. The demo video has no sound; what happens in it, and its captions, are written out below it, and it can be paused. The changing pictures can be paused, and they do not move at all when your device asks for reduced motion. The pages work at 400% zoom and on narrow screens without scrolling sideways.
We assessed the website ourselves on 16 September 2026: an automated check (axe-core) and a manual check with the keyboard, zoom, a narrow screen and both themes.
2. The app
The app partly meets WCAG 2.2 at level AA. We assessed it ourselves on 21 September 2026: an automated check (axe-core) of every page in both themes, on a wide and on a narrow screen, and a check with the keyboard alone of the tree, its menus and its dialogs. A first try with a screen reader in a desktop browser showed that it reads out the text of the cards. A full test with a screen reader, on a phone as well, is still to come, and this statement will be updated with its result.
What that assessment found has been repaired: the contrast of faint text and of buttons in both themes; dialogs now take the keyboard with them when they open, keep it inside, and give it back when they close; the menu of a person's card and the menus of the top bar can be used with the keyboard alone; every picture button has a name; the drawing no longer announces itself as something it is not; and the app moves less for people who have asked their device for less motion. Not part of the assessment: the panel with a person's details, the forms for adding people, sharing, the first-run introduction and adding people by voice.
What works: every person in a tree can be reached and opened with the keyboard, and each card carries the person's name as text. Forms, dialogs and menus have labels and work with the keyboard. The app has a light and a dark theme, works with the browser's zoom and on narrow screens. Signing in needs no password to remember. Zooming the tree has buttons as well as gestures.
Known shortcomings: on a phone, a very wide tree shown whole has cards smaller than a fingertip; zooming in, or Find someone, reaches any person. A family tree is a drawing, and the lines that show who is related to whom are not described in text; a screen reader user learns the relations from each person's details instead, where parents, partners and children are listed. Dragging the tree with a pointer has no full keyboard equivalent beyond moving from card to card. The printed posters are pictures and are not accessible documents. Voice input has no captions of its own, but everything it adds is shown as text and asked about before it is saved.
